Athens, 447 BCE. The Acropolis is a construction site. Marble dust hangs in the air like vape clouds at a Dimes Square vernissage, except this will actually matter. Phidias, the greatest sculptor anyone has ever seen, moves between work crews screaming at apprentices who cannot get the drapery right. Down in the city, Sophocles is workshopping a new tragedy while Socrates haunts the agora debating ideas he will later die for.

I used to think the mind-blowing thing about Ancient Greece was the sheer volume of philosophical and aesthetic output compressed into a few hundred years. Nearly every modern domain of knowledge invented by the same civilization: philosophy, astronomy, geometry, mathematics, democracy, medicine, figurative art, the Olympics. A civilization-scale hack. A cheat code for history.

I was wrong. It was not centuries.

Nearly everything foundational to Western civilization was created in one city over thirty years. 461 to 429 BCE. Not across generations. Not across an empire. Nope. Just one city. Three decades. The entire aesthetic vocabulary that would dominate the world for two millennia, invented in the same window of time it takes most people to figure out their skincare routine.

Survey the Athenian output in these 30 years and try not to dissociate: the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion. Aeschylus writes the Oresteia. Sophocles writes Oedipus Rex, Antigone, Electra. Euripides writes Medea, The Trojan Women, The Bacchae. The three tragedians who define Western drama are all alive and working in the same city simultaneously, which would be like having Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov in one place except they are actively competing with each other and the losers get publicly humiliated in front of seventeen thousand people. Socrates is teaching in the agora. Herodotus is writing the first real history. Thucydides is documenting the war that will end all of this with a clarity and rigor that will not be matched for centuries. Hippocrates is inventing medicine as a discipline distinct from just dabbling in herbs and hoping for the best.

Phidias sculpts the Athena Parthenos, a forty-foot statue of gold and ivory that contemporaries called one of the wonders of the world. Polykleitos develops the Canon, a mathematical theory of ideal human proportions that will influence art until the twentieth century.

Then it all stopped. Just stopped. Like someone flipped a switch.

And here is the question worth actually sitting with: how does one city produce the aesthetic blueprint for civilization in thirty years? And why, if we are so much richer and more educated and more technologically advanced, can we not do it again? Why is our aesthetic output a crisis-level joke?

It is 2026. Fifty years of unprecedented material wealth. The results: Marvel movies where the stakes keep receding toward the event horizon of pure abstraction, glass box architecture designed by the same algorithm that recommends you protein powder, media content so derivative it makes you nostalgic for mediocrity, and a banana duct-taped to a wall selling for $6.2 million, which is just money laundering with extra steps.

Athens got thirty years of transcendent beauty.

It’s 376 CE, the Danube riverbank. Tens of thousands of Gothic refugees are massed at the Roman border, desperate, starving, fleeing the Huns. Roman officials stand on the opposite bank, panicking about culture. These people are barbarians. They speak a Germanic tongue, not Latin. They cook with butter, not olive oil. They braid their hair weird. They fight in the nude. Let them in, and what happens to civilization?

Ammianus Marcellinus describes the scene with the barely concealed horror of someone watching their Ivy League roommate eat Velveeta straight from the package: “the barbarians were crossing the river day and night, without ceasing, in ships and rafts and canoes made of hollow tree trunks.”

The Roman Senate debates. Traditionalists argue this will pollute Roman culture, destroy civic virtue, end civilization. The emperor, desperate for military manpower, overrules them. The Goths are admitted as federated allies, settlement rights in return for military service. Roman elites lose it. One senator compares it to “introducing wolves into the sheepfold”, an ancient Tucker Carlson doing his concerned-face thing. Another warns that Roman youth will be corrupted, Latin contaminated, cultural integrity finished. “They’re not sending their best people.”

Sound familiar?

Fast-forward to February 2026. ICE is conducting raids in sanctuary cities while Tom Homan does perp walks for the cameras like he’s collecting Pokémon cards. Meanwhile in Europe, AfD is having its best polling ever as Germans panic about Islamization, Marine Le Pen is centimeters from the Élysée, and the British are discovering that voting for Brexit because of Polish plumbers didn’t actually stop the boats.

The discourse is so predictable: one side screaming about civilizational collapse, shared values under threat, the barbarians literally inside the gates. The other side with their “no human is illegal” lawn signs, their breathless threads about how immigration built this country, their quotes from Emma Lazarus that they definitely didn’t just Google five minutes ago. Both have their scholars: restrictionists invoking Gibbon like he’s scripture, progressives citing academics with “Migration Studies” in their title.

Both think they’re vindicated by history. Both have their evidence, their think tank funding, their viral threads, optimized for their respective algorithm bubbles.

Both sides are catastrophically wrong, and for reasons that reveal something genuinely strange about how cultural change actually works.

Let me show you exactly how this happened. Because the details are weird and uncomfortably relevant to 2026. Let’s go.

It’s June 323 BCE in Babylon. Alexander the Great, all of thirty-two and looking like a Greek god who’s just discovered the joys of dysentery, is croaking in some sweat-soaked palace suite that reeks of empire-sized regrets and the faint whiff of arsenic. His generals (essentially a bunch of extremely violent frat brothers) crowd around his deathbed. Someone asks where he wants to be buried. Macedonia, he whispers. The homeland. Something appropriately dignified for someone who conquered everything from Greece to India.

The generals nod solemnly. Plans are made. A golden sarcophagus is commissioned. A massive cortege will carry him home from Babylon to Macedonia in a funeral procession that’s basically Coachella on wheels, snaking across the empire he glued together with blood and sheer delusion. This is how god-kings are supposed to exit: with ceremony, with dignity, with closure.

This should have been straightforward.

Reader, it was not straightforward.

Instead what follows is possibly the most deranged corpse odyssey in human history. A 2,300-year saga of body-snatching, mistaken identity, and the absolute cosmic joke that nobody (including history’s greatest conqueror) can control what happens to their corpse once they’re dead.

Moscow, December 25, 1991, 7:32 PM. The Soviet flag comes down from the Kremlin. Seventy years of communist rule, over. The Cold War, won like a geopolitical Dark Souls fight except the loot is McDonald’s franchises.

Young people pour into streets despite December cold. Students pass around newly-legal books (Solzhenitsov, Orwell). A girl tells CNN she’s starting her own newspaper. Optimism is in the air. Babushkas cry because maybe grandchildren won’t fear state-sanctioned disappearances.

Francis Fukuyama publishes “The End of History.” Liberal democracy won forever, a thesis with the longevity of a celebrity marriage and twice the hubris. Thomas Friedman writes something about McDonald’s preventing wars.

The hope is genuine. Democracy is here. Russia is joining the West.

Cut to: Moscow, 2026.

Putin (dead-eyed KGB officer who never stopped being a KGB officer) has held power 26 years. Political opponents drink polonium tea and croak. Elections are performance art for an audience of observers who file reports everyone ignores. The girl who started a newspaper? Emigrated to Berlin after her newspaper got shut down for “foreign influence.”

How did we get here?

This is a pattern that repeats across civilizations, centuries. It’s is a pattern that transcends ethnicity or culture. It is observable like market crashes or a Brooklyn neighborhood’s life cycle from gritty to Goldman Sachs analyst housing. It’s a pattern observed by a Greek historian 2,200 years ago, and it tells you why all democracies are doomed to die, and how. Including the one you live in right now.

It’s 1350 CE, western Greenland. A Norse farmer watches pack ice expand further into the fjord than he’s ever seen. His cattle have shrunk to the size of large dogs from starvation. The vibes are identical to those images of emaciated animals that PETA uses to emotionally manipulate you into donating, except this is just Malthusian reality meeting medieval European hubris in real time. The barley failed again. His children are hungry. Winter is staying longer, killing everything.

Across the fjord, Inuit hunters return in kayaks loaded with seals. Fat, calorically dense seals that will feed families for weeks. The Inuit arrived only two centuries ago, much later than the Vikings, and figured out what should be obvious to anyone: you can’t farm in the Arctic. You hunt. You adapt. You survive.

He turns back to his dying cattle. He will not learn to hunt seals. He will not wear skins. He will not become like them.

His descendants will make this exact same choice for the next hundred years. By 1450 CE, there won’t be a single Norse person left alive in Greenland.

The Inuit are still there.

Now fast-forward to January 2026. Trump just kidnapped Venezuela’s president for AI energy reasons and now wants Greenland “for purposes of national security.” No, not wants. He needs. He’s appointed a special envoy whose only job is making it happen. Denmark is having a meltdown and threatening that this could end NATO. And the 56,000 people actually living in Greenland are watching the richest, most powerful nations on Earth fight over their home like it’s a distressed asset in a bankruptcy auction.

The Greenlanders are posting their flag on social media. The White House posts this to troll everybody:

It’s December 362 CE, Constantinople. The imperial palace is buzzing with excitement that hasn’t been felt in decades. Emperor Julian, 31 years old, philosophy-pilled since his student days in Athens, secretly pagan his entire adult life, sits surrounded by a dream team of pagan intellectuals. They’re planning the restoration of paganism across the Roman Empire.

Constantine had made Christianity the state religion fifty years prior. Now that he was dead, his nephew Julian believed he was going to save Rome from what he perceived as this Middle Eastern death cult that’s somehow ate the empire.

Julian has a plan. Actually, he has the plan. Redirect state funding from churches back to temples. Build pagan charitable networks to compete with Christian social services. Reorganize the priesthood. Ban Christians from teaching classics if they think Homer and Virgil are demonic. It’s a sophisticated plan. He has imperial power, military backing, intellectual superiority, and popular support. Christianity has only been legal for fifty years. People still remember the old gods.

Control the discourse, rebuild the infrastructure, restore the funding. Simple. Elegant. Achievable.

On paper, this is the easiest layup in Roman history.

Two years later, Julian would be dead in Persia with a spear through his liver, and the pagan restoration would die with him. His successor Jovian, reversed all his policies before Julian’s corpse had achieved room temperature. Within a decade, Christianity was mandatory. Within thirty years, paganism was illegal, and pagan temples were rubble.

How could Julian fail? He had every possible advantage. Imperial power. Intellectual superiority. Military strength. Popular support. A brilliant strategy. A Roman Emperor with the backing of all of the state’s might.

And he got absolutely destroyed.

Which means he wasn’t fighting what everyone thinks he was fighting.

What was he fighting? If you think the answer is “Christianity had better ideas” or “people preferred monotheism” or “Jesus is Lord and truth prevails,” I have some extremely uncomfortable news about how power actually works, how cultures actually change.

It applies yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

Why did Julian fail? The answer will make you rethink every comfortable narrative about truth and ideas and the arc of history. Because none of those things mattered.

What matters is something darker and far more sinister.

It’s 244 CE. The Roman Emperor is a Syrian. He just banned prostitution across the empire. Eleven years earlier, his predecessor (also pagan, also Syrian) appointed twelve officials specifically tasked with enforcing “moral decency in public and private life.” Bathhouses that used to let men and women bathe together naked? Now Gender-segregated by imperial decree. This the third emperor in a century to try enforcing it.

Jesus won’t be the state religion for another 68 years.

Here’s the common story you’ve probably heard: Rome was basically one extended bathhouse orgy where everyone was tastefully nude and living a hedonistic freewheeling lifestyle that would make a modern bushwick hipster weep with envy, and then Christianity showed up and suddenly everyone had to wear seventeen layers of wool for modesty and women had to veil and develop complex neuroses about their own bodies. The sequel to Caligula except directed by an evangelical youth pastor.

Clean villain. Simple narrative. Satisfying arc from sexual abundance to repressive lack. The kind of story that lets you blame all of Western body-shame neurosis on one specific institution.

Except here’s the thing that should bother anyone who’s ever actually looked at the evidence: those aren’t togas all the way down. Those are modesty pants, a century before Jesus was born. The emperors issuing morality edicts? Pagan. The officials enforcing “decency in public and private life”? Appointed by a pagan emperor who worshipped multiple gods including Christ as philosophical curiosities. The sexual regulation legislation? Pre-Christian. The gender segregation in public spaces? Already being enforced by multiple emperors who never set foot in a church.

Which means at some point between “Caligula appointed his horse to the Senate” Rome and “Constantine saw a vision” Rome, something happened that nobody wants to talk about. The culture had already started getting weird about bodies in ways that can’t be blamed on Christian killjoys.

The periodization is wrong. The villain origin story is wrong. And the real story, the one with actual dates, actual laws, actual archaeological evidence, is significantly more uncomfortable than “Christians imported shame.”

Because what if Christianity didn’t transform Roman body politics at all? What if Rome had already been transformed….by something else?

The first European hero is Achilles: epic warrior, also a man so petty that when his boss takes his war prize, he has a complete meltdown, sits in his tent, and prays to Zeus to make his own army lose so they’ll realize how much they need him. Achilles develops main character syndrome in a war with no main character.

This is the founding gesture of Western individualism. The problem is: Achilles’ refusal has consequences.

Tehran, March 8, 1979. The revolution is five weeks old and already eating its children.

Over 100,000 women flood the streets. nurses, students, professionals, all bareheaded and furious. “In the dawn of freedom,” they chant, “we have no freedom.” The day before, Ayatollah Khomeini decreed women must wear hijab in government offices or stop showing up “naked.”

For six days the numbers grow. Pro-Khomeini forces attack with knives and stones. The women are branded traitors, counter-revolutionaries, bourgeois imperialist stooges. The full Stalinist bingo card.

But they weren’t attacked just by Islamists. They were condemned by the communists. The Marxists. The garden-variety Left. Virtually all the leftist factions of the rebellion seemed to be Team Khomeini at that point. The Tudeh Party (Iran’s official communist party before Khomeini had it banned and its members hanged) called the protests “reactionary.” They went out of their way to condemn these protests as “vassals for imperialism”. Leftist intellectual Homa Nategh recalls trying to dissuade these women from protesting with this logic: “If Hijab is the only means to get free of Imperialism, if it’s the price, then we’ll pay.” The revolutionary subject as a credit card rewards program.

Years later, Nategh admits: “It was me who finished the women’s protests. They were moving their veils on top of their heads hoping somebody would help them. Nobody came.”

It’s a common misconception that in the Iranian revolution of ‘79, the leftists were outmaneuvered. Outnumbered. Outplayed by a more powerful Islamist force that had the masses on their side. Poor leftists, they fought so hard but just couldn’t compete with religious populism.

But the truth is actually quite shocking.

In the late 1970s, leftist organizations in Iran vastly outnumbered Islamist groups.

You had the Tudeh Party (Communist Party), tens of thousands of members, and an established organizational infrastructure dating back to the 1940s. You had armed guerrillas like the Fedai’an-e Khalq, Iran’s largest Marxist organization. They’d been doing the dangerous work for years: assassinations, bank robberies, underground organizing. These are people who knew which end of the Kalashnikov the bullets come out of. They had the guns, the experience, the revolutionary credentials. You had trade union networks reaching hundreds of thousands of workers. You had numerous smaller Maoist, Trotskyist, and other leftist factions.

The leftists were the vanguard. They organized the oil strikes that crippled the regime. They built the underground networks. They survived SAVAK torture chambers and came back for more. They had actual organizational infrastructure while the Islamists mostly had… mosques. And vibes.

The left had the numbers. The weapons. The working-class base. The theoretical frameworks. Marx, Lenin, Gramsci, the whole gang. Everything they needed to seize power.

Instead, they subordinated the entire movement to the Islamic fundamentalists. They literally theorized themselves into subordination.

Fast-forward to August 1988. Evin Prison, Tehran. Khomeini by this point had killed most of the leftists in opposition. Those who survived the initial purges - and by “survived” I mean “were in prison and somehow haven’t been executed yet” - are being called out of their cells. They’re told to answer some questions about their religious beliefs. Just administrative stuff, they’re assured. Totally routine. Nothing to worry about.

The questions are designed to identify apostates. Anyone who fails the vibe check gets hanged. That’s not metaphorical. Literally hanged.

By the time the killing stops, somewhere around 10,000 political prisoners are dead. Mass graves so shallow that stray dogs tear apart the bodies. Nine years. That’s the timeline. Nine years from “we’re the revolutionary vanguard” to “shallow graves and feral dogs.”

As Iran convulses in revolution once again, it’s worth reflecting on the first revolution, and the lessons we learnt (or didn’t learn). Why did avowed communists abandon all their progressive principals, and throw their hat behind an extreme right wing medieval religious cleric? Why would they subvert the progressive project in revolutionary Iran and cheerlead the state’s conversion into a theocracy? Were they sleeping at the wheel?

How was their revolution stolen from them? Or was it even stolen? Did they give it up willingly?or unwittingly?

The answer is startling and also has little to do with Iran.

It’s 1501, Tabriz. A 14-year-old kid who’s been hiding in the mountains his entire childhood suddenly rides into the capital at the head of 7,000 fanatical warriors wearing red turbans. This red-headed teenager named Ismail is the spiritual leader of a Sufi order called the Safavids. Ismail commands a tiny force of Turkmen cavalry who believe he is the Mahdi, the messiah, literally semi-divine. They throw themselves into battle unarmed because they think he has miraculous powers.

Over the next few years, they fight battle after battle until they control all of what is modern-day Iran. He defeats the Uzbeks, kills their leader, and has his skull made into a bejeweled drinking cup. The divine invincibility thing seems confirmed.

Freshly crowned as Shah Ismail, he establishes the Safavid dynasty, which rules Iran for 250 years, and restores the old name of the state (Iran means ‘land of the Aryans’).

Historians consider this the start of modern Iranian history, where Iran is no longer an occupied Arab or Turkish or Mongolian province, but a sovereign Persian state. They also considers it the start of modern Iranian history for one other significant reason:

Shah Ismail also issues a decree: all Iranians must convert to Shi’ism. Indeed, Iran’s modern history starts….with a total theocracy, ruled over by a zealous messiah.

Iran at that point was 90 percent Sunni, and forcibly changing their religion was a tall order. So why do something this radical and alienate your entire population?

While Ismail did truly believe he was the Mehdi / Messiah, he was no loony bin alumni. He was a deft politician. Ismail was executing a coldly calculated geopolitical maneuver. To the west, the massive Sunni Ottoman Empire. To the east, the Sunni Uzbeks. If Persia stays Sunni, it gets absorbed. The Ottomans have been swallowing Sunni territories like a particularly aggressive real estate developer.

But if Persia becomes Shi’a? If the state religion is theologically incompatible with both flanking empires? Then absorption becomes impossible. You can’t merge with an entity that considers your entire religious framework heretical. Religious difference equals political independence. It’s the same logic as European monarchs picking Protestant versus Catholic based on whose army was bigger during the Reformation, the vibes-based consensus that launched a thousand wars. Except Ismail actually believes it too. He was Machiavellian *and* sincere. The most dangerous kind of zealot, the kind that hears the voice of God and can also do math.

They hardcoded all of it. You’re living inside their discursive prison and you don’t even have the cheat codes.

Most people inherit these ideas without knowing where they came from. They argue about politics without understanding Hobbes, Locke, or Rousseau. They talk about authenticity without reading Rousseau or Heidegger. They critique power structures without understanding Foucault’s sources.

So, the idea of the podcast is to give you (and me) the intellectual framework to make sense of the world.

It’s December 1830, Santa Marta, Colombia. Simón Bolívar: the Grand Liberator, the man who freed half a continent from Spanish rule, is dying in a borrowed nightie in someone else’s house. He’s 47 but looks 70, ravaged by tuberculosis and bitterness. The man who led armies across the Andes, who liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, owns nothing. Not a house, not land, not even the shirt on his back. His dream of ‘Gran Colombia’ (a unified South American federation that could stand against empires) is already fracturing into a bunch of bickering banana republics before his eyes: Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. Like a polycule exploding after someone screenshots the group chat.

In his final days, he delivers what might be the most devastating political epitaph in history: “Those who have served the revolution have ploughed the sea.”

Futility. Wasted effort. You can’t plough the ocean. The conventional reading: Latin American political chaos makes nation-building impossible, revolution is inherently doomed, the dream of independent republics was always cope.

Fast-forward to January 3, 2026. US military rolls into Caracas like it’s Uber Eats. Maduro and his Botoxed wife get snatched, zip-tied, flown to some carrier (USS Iwo Jima, lol), then perp-walked in Brooklyn on narcoterrorism charges. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela—named after the guy who croaked in that thrift-store nightgown—just got its prez kidnapped by gringos. Again.

Nixon bombed Cambodia for four years in secret. Kissinger destabilized entire governments through 17 layers of CIA cutouts and still denied it under oath. Trump literally live tweets ‘WE GOT HIM!’ with a photo of Maduro’s Perp Walk. The hegemony got tired of the kayfabe and just started saying the quiet part at stadium volume. Kind of refreshing, in a psychotic way.

But here’s the thing that should make you uneasy: What if Bolívar wasn’t wrong? What if he clocked something everyone else has spent 200 years refusing to acknowledge?

Hugo Chávez took power in Venezuela in 1998 with Bolívar’s name on his lips. It wasn’t a subtle homage. He renamed the country the “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.” He launched the “Bolivarian Revolution.” He invoked Bolívar in nearly every speech. He recycled the whole revolutionary aesthetic. He even digs up Bolívar’s bones for a fancy new tomb because why not add necromancy to your cult starter pack? The symbolism was unambiguous: we’re completing the liberation project. No more yankee bootlicking!

Nicolás Maduro inherited this entire ideological framework when Chávez died in 2013. Less charismatic, significantly less competent, basically if you ordered a knockoff Chávez from Temu. For two decades, Venezuela positioned itself as the modern inheritor of Bolívar’s vision—genuine independence, Latin American unity, freedom from foreign domination.

And throughout all of this—all twenty-six years of Bolivarian rhetoric—there were US sanctions, US pressure, constant American involvement. It wasn’t 200 years of independence followed by intervention. It was 200 years of continuous intervention with different justifications, different legal frameworks, but the same underlying dynamic.

The “resistance” was always happening within American parameters. The “independence” was always conditional. The “sovereignty” was always with an asterisk. Which raises the question: What was Bolívar actually observing when he said “ploughed the sea”?

It turns out Bolivar lived just long enough to see the Monroe Doctrine.

Proclaimed by US President James Monroe in 1823, seven years before Bolívar’s death, the Monroe Doctrine announced to the world that “the Americas” were henceforth the United States’ sphere of influence. European powers should stay out. The Western Hemisphere belonged to “the Americans, meaning, not ambiguously, to the USA. It’s the geopolitical equivalent of “I’m not like other empires, I’m a cool empire.”

Here’s what Bolívar figured out, what his final words suggest he understood: The sea he was trying to plough wasn’t Latin American political chaos or instability or the supposed incapacity for self-governance.

The sea was American power.

You cannot build sovereign structures when you’re swimming in someone else’s pool. You cannot establish genuine independence when a hemispheric hegemon has declared your entire region its strategic backyard. You can call yourself independent, write constitutions, elect presidents, raise armies. But you’re still swimming in yankee waters.

The pattern since 1823 has been remarkably consistent. Every Latin American government that has attempted to chart a course genuinely independent of US interests has faced consequences. Guatemala, 1954: democratically elected government attempting land reform, overthrown by CIA-backed coup. Chile, 1973: socialist government nationalized copper, military coup backed by American intelligence on September 11th (yes, that September 11th, before it rebranded). Nicaragua throughout the 1980s: Sandinista revolution, Contra war funded by the United States. The justifications change—anti-communism, democracy promotion, drug war—but the constraint remains constant.

Step outside US interests, get slapped. This isn’t conspiracy theory, this is documented historical pattern. The sea is the sea.

Gran Colombia didn’t fracture because Latin Americans were incapable of building stable institutions (the racist cope that justified a century of intervention). It fractured because you cannot build independent power structures in waters controlled by a hemispheric hegemon. Bolívar died understanding this. His revolution hadn’t failed because of his mistakes. It had encountered an immovable obstacle: American hegemonic power in the Western Hemisphere.

Two hundred years later, Maduro, invoking Bolívar’s name, flying the Bolivarian flag, running the Bolivarian Republic, gets literally kidnapped by the US military.

Still in the same ocean. Still trying to plough the sea. Still drowning.

Ok, but why now? Why January 2026?

Is it just to get the oil?

It’s true that Venezuela sits on 303 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. The largest in the world. More than Saudi Arabia. More than anyone. Worth approximately $17 trillion at current prices.

Every government that has controlled Venezuela, regardless of ideology, has existed to extract and sell this oil. Chávez nationalized the industry with great anti-capitalist fanfare, still sold oil. Maduro controls it while wearing tracksuits and ranting about economic sabotage, still sells oil. Whatever comes next will extract and sell oil.

But it still doesn’t answer the question of why now. The oil has been there forever. Maduro’s been cosplaying Bolivar for over a decade, and before him Chavez was cosplaying Bolivar for another two decades. The election fraud isn’t new—he’s been doing that since 2013. The drug trafficking networks aren’t new either. Venezuela’s been a narco-state for years. It’s been a ‘Bolivarian Republic’ since the late 90’s.

So why did this intervention happen NOW? What changed in 2025-2026 that made this the moment?

Picture this: It’s January 1st in Arles, early 6th century. The streets are complete chaos. Men stumble through cobblestones wearing women’s dresses and flower crowns. Others have donned stag heads and goatskins, bleating mock-prayers to Janus. Wine flows from jugs held by baptized Christians who were literally in church last Sunday. Dice clatter. Fortune-tellers whisper predictions. The whole city has shut down for the Kalends of January, the way it’s shut down for this week since before anyone can remember.

Inside the basilica, Bishop Caesarius of Arles is seething.

He’s been preaching against this for years. Every January he rails against the “devilish activities”, dropping multi-hour kino sermons diagnosing the “diabolical jouissance” of it all: the gender-bending drag, the zoomorphic fetish gear, the Dionysian blackout sessions.

“How is it,” he thunders to his half-empty church (everyone else is at the party), “that an intelligent man, a Christian, is not ashamed to do on the Kalends of January what a pagan would blush to do?”

Outside: primal whoops, percussive frenzy, collective hysterical laughter ricocheting off the Roman stonework.

Caesarius deploys every tool in the ecclesiastical arsenal: interminable homilies, anathemas, excommunication speedruns. He even mandates January 1–3 as obligatory fasting and mortification days. Nothing works.

Here’s what he knows in his bones: he’s losing. This party has been happening for 700 years. The Church has been fighting it for maybe 200. The math is not in his favor.

Smash cut to Times Square, 2026, tourists packed like sardines in ugly LED glasses, awaiting the descent of the neoliberal spectacle-ball sponsored by whatever soulless megacorp paid for the naming rights this year. 10…9…8… confetti blast, compulsory hetero makeouts with strangers who smell like vodka and regret, immediately posting your delusional “glow-up arc” resolutions that you’ll abandon faster than a tradcath wife abandons Vatican II the moment she gets a whiff of 1950s aesthetics.

The party never stopped. Caesarius lost.

Here are the facts: January 1st has exactly zero Christian significance. Jesus wasn’t born, didn’t die, didn’t rise on this date. The Annunciation? Nope. Pentecost? Try again. The eighth day after Christmas when baby Jesus gets circumcised? Correct. That’s the profound cosmic significance of the date we’ve designated as the moment of renewal and fresh starts. That’s your “cosmic renewal” moment, goyim: a tiny bris for the Messiah.

The Church knew this. Church fathers condemned January 1st for centuries. They tried alternatives. March 25th (the Annunciation), Easter, December 25th, September 1st. England used March 25th for seven hundred years. These were serious, sustained attempts to have a theologically meaningful calendar.

They all failed. We’re still celebrating on the Roman date. The pagan date. The date Caesarius called devilish.

How did that happen?

Let’s establish the hegemonic narrative around what we think we’re celebrating. New year, new you. Fresh starts. Renewal and rebirth. The turning of the cosmic wheel. Entire industries are parasitic on this cope. Gym memberships, diet plans, vision boards, dry January discourse. We’ve collectively decided this particular midnight means something cosmically, spiritually, personally significant.

But January 1st is arguably the worst possible date for symbolizing renewal. The dead of winter. Nothing is being born. Nothing is sprouting. It’s cold and bleak and you’re fat from Christmas and mostly trying not to die of seasonal depression.

If you wanted actual renewal symbolism, you’d pick spring when things literally renew, or the winter solstice when light actually returns.

And did I mention the church loathed that day?

The early Church fathers were absolutely unhinged about January 1st celebrations.

John Chrysostom preached entire sermons against Christians joining the “shameful practices.” Drunkenness, dancing, gambling, general debauchery. Augustine condemned the “sacrilegious rites.” But Caesarius is the MVP of anti-January 1st discourse. Multiple sermons cataloging the depravity: men cross-dressing, wearing animal skins, fortune-telling, excessive feasting. His frustration practically radiates through the Latin. Absolutely seething.

The Council of Tours in 567 CE declared January 1-3 as official days of fasting and penance. Ecclesiastical decree: no feasting, just prayer and self-denial.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. People kept partying. The vibes were too immaculate.

And the Church had alternatives that actually made theological sense! March 25th, the Annunciation, when God enters time and salvation history starts. England used this for 700 years. Easter, the Resurrection, literally the most important event in Christianity. December 25th, at least explicitly about Christ. September 1st, what Byzantium used because they believed it’s when God created the world.

All of these were more defensible than January 1st. All were tried by various parts of Christendom. All lost to January 1st.

There’s something comforting about the Anglo-Saxon democracy origin story. You have cottagecore England, thatched roofs, and based Saxon warriors gathering under sacred oak trees giving each other the ancient equivalent of upvotes by clashing their spears. It’s this idea that democracy was an authentic homegrown English product, not some continental import reeking of guillotines and sans-culottes, but something that emerges organically from the Volk like sourdough starter or seasonal depression.

Edward Augustus Freeman, the Victorian historian, once wrote that “The life of our own Constitution, in its original elements, goes back to times which we have no record to measure.” For Freeman, the narrative was clean: Saxon freemen assembled in their village moots to determine community affairs through vibes-based consensus, and this would eventually evolve through Parliament, through the Magna Carts, and through the long psychodrama against Norman tyranny, into modern British democracy. Jefferson posted about “Saxon liberties” to justify the Revolution. Churchill traced the “English-speaking peoples” back to Germanic tribes. The story made democracy feel inevitable, organic, ontologically ours.

Except it wasn’t entirely true.

This narrative first came from English Civil War radicals like the Levellers who needed to delegitimize the monarchy. Their move was clever: reframe the Norman Conquest of 1066 as the original stolen election. The story goes: before William the Conqueror, England was a workers’ paradise of Saxon liberty. Then the Normans imposed feudalism and aristocratic tyranny, destroying native English freedom. The “Norman Yoke” theory made revolution sound like restoration.

The Empire needed justification too. Americans ate this up. New England town meetings were Saxon moots, making American democracy ancient English heritage instead of French Revolutionary slop.

Victorian scholars built entire disciplines around this grift. Freeman and J.R. Green wrote thousand-page histories presenting Saxon England as the golden age before the Fall. This was peer-reviewed, taught at Oxford, and repeated in textbooks.

In reality, Norman administration replaced Saxon structures completely. You could call it a ‘Hard Reset’. The witan just disappeared. Local assemblies got subordinated to Norman manorial courts. When Parliament emerged in the 13th century, nobody was doing a Saxon callback. They were operating in pure feudal logic where kings needed money and feudal custom said vassals owed counsel and consent regarding taxation. Parliament was feudalism’s way of extracting surplus value with extra steps, modeled partly on French parliament traditions.

There is no line from Saxon moots to Westminster. The whole story is Victorian fanfiction that somehow became canon.

Socially, they’re a mess, one guy’s in charge because he’s marginally better at sniffing out water than the others. Zero villages, zero crops, zero vibes beyond “survive another day.” They are, by every measure we use, textbook hunter-gatherers living a subsistence lifestyle that had remained essentially unchanged for tens of thousands of years.

Today, “meme” conjures up a looping TikTok sound or a recycled Twitter joke, but the original concept was more ambitious: memes are cultural genes. Units of thought, gesture, or style that replicate, mutate, and evolve. They survive not by truth or merit, but by adaptability and appeal. The moment when our imperial delusion began has a specific date: August 15, 1971. On that day, Nixon was addressing the nation, on television screens across America, announcing what amounted to a national default, with the slick evasiveness that made his name synonymous with political corruption. He announced he had just killed the gold standard. Poof, Bretton Woods was gone, and so was America’s promise to back its money.

But markets didn’t crash on the news of this default; they rallied.

This wasn’t just a policy oopsie; this was the moment we decided reality was optional, and everyone just played along. We can print money from nothing whenever we need, and we can buy goods and balloon our national debt, and it’s just a number with no consequences.
